Horses as Masters of Mindfulness

‘Mindfulness’ is a buzz word at the moment. In some respects that is helpful as it means people are reminded about the importance of taking time for reflection. It is also unhelpful as many have preconceived ideas about what mindfulness is – and those can make it seem unachievable.

Mindfulness is simply bringing your awareness to the present moment. It is not sitting in the lotus position and trying to empty your mind. It is not trying to schedule in a 30 minute meditation into an already packed schedule.  It is a pause, a breath, a welcome break from the to-do list, a reflection on the fact we are called human beings, not human doings.  We run around and do a whole lot, but often it is just a habit that we can’t also find some peace in the midst of the day, and habits can be changed.

Horses as prey animals are VERY good at being aware in the present moment. Those who are not become lunch for a hungry predator. But seeing a herd of horses snoozing in a field also exemplifies that even in a busy life with ‘threats’ (for horses – predators, for humans – the angry boss, the never-ending inbox, the stress caused by the news or social media) it is possible to find peace. Horses are there living their lives unencumbered by ‘shoulds’ and expectations. They are in perfect connection to the nature around them. They live lives that are both gloriously simple, yet also intricately complex, with perfect grace and dignity. Spending time with them as a human visitor to the equine world, we can learn to do the same.

Want to give it a go?

Sit somewhere peaceful – ideally next to a field of calmly grazing horses – and turn your attention to your breathing. Breath in through your nose, and out through your mouth. If thoughts pop into your head, just remind your brain that you will get back to ‘doing mode’ in a bit, but that right now those thoughts are unnecessary. Focus on the breathing, or if you prefer you could focus on a sound (birdsong) or a sight (the horses, a candle, a beautiful leaf).
